The pattern is consistent: closed pods are cheapest to start and by far the most expensive to run, because you are buying liquid at a very high price per millilitre. Refillable pods are the cheapest option overall for most people. Box mods land in between — the hardware costs more and they use more liquid, but bulk bottles and multi-pack coils bring the per-week figure down.

The middle ground most people end up in
Pod-mods have largely absorbed the space between the two. These take replaceable pods with a range of coil resistances, run 20 – 40 W, offer some wattage adjustment, and use a battery large enough to see out a day. For a great many people this is the sensible landing point: much of the flavour of a sub-ohm tank, much of the convenience of a pod, and no battery-safety homework.
It is also worth saying that keeping both is common and cheap. A pod for work and travel, a mod for evenings at home, is a very typical arrangement and costs little more than a single higher-end device.
Questions to answer before buying
- How discreet do you need to be? If the answer is "very", a box mod is the wrong tool regardless of its other merits.
- Are replacement pods or coils easy to get for this model? A great device with scarce consumables becomes a paperweight.
- Do you want to charge daily? Pods generally require it. Removable-cell mods let you swap instead.
