Battery safety essentials

Lithium cells last longest kept between roughly twenty and eighty per cent charge, at room temperature. Leaving a device flat for weeks, or fully charged in a hot car, both shorten service life considerably.

Cells are consumables. Reducing runtime, cells running hot, or rising internal resistance all mean it is time to replace rather than persist — and old cells go to a battery recycling point, never in household waste.

Use only cells with an intact wrap and a continuous discharge rating that comfortably exceeds what your build draws. A nicked or torn wrap exposes the negative casing and is a genuine short-circuit risk — rewrap it or retire it, and never run a damaged cell "just for now".

Marry your batteries. Cells used as a pair should be the same brand, same model, bought together, charged together and always used together, so they age at the same rate and neither is pushed to carry the other.
